Salmon Arm Boasts Big Winter Adventure

It’s that time of year – falling temperatures and the occasional snow flurry send a clear message that winter is on its way! While there’s no doubt the Shuswap has earned itself a reputation as a popular summer vacation destination, it might just be even more attractive – especially to adventure seekers – in the winter, when colder weather transforms the region into a magical wonderland.

Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast seeking adrenaline-fueled experiences or a more relaxed adventurer just wanting to unwind in a remote alpine cabin, Salmon Arm has something to offer everyone. Read on to discover some of the best ways to experience winter adventure in Salmon Arm.

Explore the Nordic Trails at Larch Hills

Just beyond Salmon Arm’s city limits lies the Larch Hills Nordic ski area, a 150-kilometre network of trails winding their way through frozen bogs and enchanted forests. Nordic skiers can choose from more than 50 km of groomed trails; meanwhile, plenty of snowshoe trails await those who prefer a more leisurely walk through the woods. Don’t have your own equipment? No problem! A quick stop at John’s Ski Shack on your way up the hill will have you geared up in no time.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for annual events like the Santa Cruise and Lantern Ski, which provide the perfect opportunity to mingle with locals over a cup of hot cocoa in the chalet, post-event. See the Larch Hills Nordic Society website for more information.

Overnight at Cec’s Cabin

If you really want to up the ante on your adventure in the Shuswap, why not add an overnight stay at Cec’s cabin to your Larch Hills itinerary? You’ll find the rustic cabin near the top of the groomed runs on Larch Hills Road (or via a winding, uphill route called Coffey’s Climb, if you’re on snowshoes). The cabin must be booked in advance by emailing info@skilarchhills.ca or calling 236-586-5711. Cost is $10 per person. The cabin is equipped with a woodstove and firewood but plan to bring everything else you’ll need for a good night’s sleep – including your sense of adventure!

Hike to Margaret Falls

Located in beautiful Herald Provincial Park, Margaret Falls is a stunning spectacle regardless of the season; however, only in winter will you get a glimpse of the falls in all their frozen glory. The short hike winds along Reinecker Creek, crossing several bridges along the way, and ending at a viewing platform at the base of the falls. The trail is dog friendly and suitable for all levels of hikers and snowshoers, making it an excellent option for families and adventurers of all ages. Don't forget your camera; the park's winter scenery is nothing short of spectacular.

Ice Fish on Gardom Lake

Ice fishing is a great activity for families or groups of friends looking for a unique winter adventure. One of the smaller lakes in the region, Gardom Lake freezes over during the winter, offering excellent ice fishing opportunities. Gather your gear, head out onto the ice, and try your hand at catching a trout or two.

New to the sport? Westside Stores has got you covered. A family-owned business with a long history in Salmon Arm, they have fishing supplies and knowledgeable staff to set you up for success. With a little help from them, you’ll soon be ready to test your angling skills while surrounded by the tranquility of the frozen lake and snow-covered landscapes. Make sure to check ice conditions and safety guidelines before venturing out onto the ice.

Just a ten-minute drive from downtown Salmon Arm, nestled in the sleepy hollow of Notch Hill, lies Walter’s Farm. Carrying on a tradition that began more than three decades ago, the Walters offer horse-drawn sleigh rides throughout the winter months. Jingles bells, hay bales and hand-stitched quilts all add to the nostalgia of the experience, not to mention the hot cocoa and homemade cinnamon buns that will be waiting for you in the Walter’s cozy cabin at the end of your ride. This is a popular activity so be sure to book well in advance, especially over the holiday season. For reservations, call 250-835-8384.
